"Why couldn't anyone say that the day I arrived?"
"Because the day you arrived, it was a different answer. You arrived sullen and, in our eyes, a complete brat. Now, you had very good reasons for your behavior, and no one believes you are a brat now. But that was the impression you gave when you arrived. Do you understand why you may have been treated the way you were if that was the impression we had?"
I sighed. "I guess."
"But those days are two years behind us, and you have been a model student since. You made me promises, and you kept them, and I am very proud of you."
I preened a little under the praise.
"Now, there is a new rule for you. You will not summon your magic at all unless it is at the direction of Magus Philene or me. I will make sure the other instructors know this."
"Am I in trouble for something?"
"No. Magus Iladarta explained she suggested you display your magic at the stationary shop, and you were appropriately hesitant. Neither of you are in trouble for that. Now, do you know why there is this rule?"
"Because I still have bad habits to break."
"Yes. We will relax this rule once you are able to separate your magic. Kia, this rule is critical. No cheating."
"I never cheat, Senior Magus Quartain, although it's hard sometimes, especially at night when I can't sleep. But I haven't cheated since coming back."
"Did you cheat before that?"
"Only while sitting in that jail cell," I said. "And I didn't consider myself under your authority any longer."
"All right. Everything that happened before you came back is behind us. Now we are only worried about moving forward."
I turned to Magus Philene. "Do you have more time for me?"
Senior Magus Quartain laughed. "Don't get ahead. We're coming to that. But yes, she does. Well, to be more accurate, you will alternate between her and me."
"Senior Magus Quartain, do you ever feel, I don't know. Full?"
"From eating too much?"
"From holding too much magic."
"Do you?"
"All the time now that you won't let me use it up." I looked at Magus Philene. "An hour isn't enough." I looked back at the senior magus. "Before I came here, I probably summoned my magic no less than an hour every day, and most days was far more. And I summoned a lot more than you let me summon. Is there anything we can do to burn more of it off?" I sighed. "It probably doesn't help Magus Philene taught me to absorb it again. Now it's like eating when I'm already stuffed."
"You want us to work you harder?"
"I understand why you won't just let me go outside and burn it off. I'm not complaining. But yes, I want you to work me harder."
"How long does it take you to get tired, Kia?"
"I might lose control if trying to do something hard, like make it really small. And then I can get a headache. But I've never gotten tired." I paused. "I think
